Fyshwick Materials Recovery Centre proposal

Fyshwick Materials Recovery Centre proposal

Capital Recycling Solutions Pty Ltd proposes to develop a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) to receive, sort, separate and export waste and recyclable material. The location of the MRF would be between Lithgow and Ipswich Streets, Fyshwick.

An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS201700053), for a Materials Recovery Facility to handle mixed waste including putrescible and commercial and industrial waste, is being assessed by the ACT Government. Only a maximum of 20% of waste received is intended for recycling and 80% is to be rail freighted to Tarago for deposit at Woodlawn landfill. The EIS closed for representation in June 2018 and should be decided soon.

A Development Application (DA201835108) for the rail freight terminal that will be dependent on the transfer of waste from the MRF adjoining the platform. The ACT Government sold the block that was part of the rail corridor buffer. This DA has been approved.

DA201834656 is for a truck freight facility on Block 11 Section 8 purchased in a direct sale to CRS. This DA was approved at the same time as the rail freight terminal.

DA201835337 is to introduce upgraded fragmentisers to process End of Life Vehicles (ELVs) and other metals. This DA was lodged by Access Recycling, a company associated with CRS. Using fragmentisers in an open air operation emits dust with metal and plastic particulates. It is a very noisy heavy industrial process.
